Total War on my SSD to help it load quicker What's important here is what your disks are, and where your games are sitting. Thanks to 88th ColPresumptuous I was able to find out what was going on and can put forward this post to help others.Īs mentioned earlier in the thread, Steam will download the game and then move the files from the 'downloading' folder to the game folder. Since this is the top thread I can find for this issue on Google I wanted to post here to potentially help those having the same issue. Good grief what a archaic way to update one's game. No wonder this game can bugger up SSD's with all the huge amounts of data being moved around every patch. WHY it does this when it could just download the patched content and then just move that far far far far far smaller amount of data it to the install folder and put it into the files it needs to I dont know. hence the huge amount of Disk Activity (open an explorer window and look at the games install folder and the steam download folder while it patchs you can see the files being moved between those two locations).

and given the size of the game that is a lot to move and is what takes up virtually all the patch time, then it patches the downloaded stuff into the files that got moved then once its all done it moves everything back into the install folder. it moves 90% of the game from the install folder to the steam download folder.
